Safety equals more paid miles for Roehl drivers.

MARSHFIELD, WI—Not getting hurt or being involved in an accident where someone else gets hurt is the best reason to drive for one of the safest carriers in the nation. But Roehl’s nationally leading safety record also puts more dollars in its drivers’ pockets every day.

“A lot of companies tout PrePass®, telling drivers it will keep them out of long DOT inspection lines,” Roehl’s Vice President of Safety John Spiros said. “But unless the company has a good safety record to go with it, the green (pass) light on that transponder is never going to go on.” Having PrePass technology in your trucks is only half the equation, Spiros explained. The system automatically signals drivers approaching weigh stations whether or not they must pull into line or can bypass the inspection based on the carrier’s safety history. The better the company’s safety record, the more often the driver is given the green light to bypass the weigh station.

With one of the best Inspection Selection System scores among truckload carriers in the nation, Roehl drivers are allowed to pass more often. “That means while drivers for other companies are pulled over waiting in a weigh station line, Roehl drivers may continue on their trips being both safe and productive. That’s more money in their paycheck and a whole lot less hassle in their day,” Spiros said.

Roehl’s ISS score of 29, which puts it well within the “pass – no inspection required” range, is based on the federal DOT SafeStat data. The SafeStat data combines the carrier’s record of crashes, roadside inspections, enforcement history (violations/citations) and on-site compliance reviews, and is updated monthly.

The American Trucking Associations recently cited Roehl’s flatbed division as the second safest small fleet in the nation. Among large carriers, (over 100 million miles annually), according to the ATA, the company’s van division is the third safest in nation.

“Drivers are starting to put more weight on a carrier’s safety record when choosing a company,” Spiros said. “With higher wages and better home time that companies like Roehl offer, OTR driving is a more viable career and among drivers there seems to be more emphasis on professionalism. Safety is part of being a professional,” he explained. There is also recognition that the driver can’t do it alone, safety has to be a companywide commitment and culture. “In making safety it’s cornerstone value, Roehl is saying that no action will be taken or allowed if it compromises safety. Everyone at Roehl -- dispatch, sales, customer service, maintenance, management understands and agrees that safety will be the guiding principle in decisions that affect our company and drivers. That’s a value our drivers appreciate,” Spiros said.

It is also a value that has led to specific policies, practices and innovative programs (such as The Roehl Way™ Protective Driving Training) that, in turn, have made Roehl one of the safest carriers on the road.

Known as the Take Home More, Be Home More Carrier™, Roehl offers the industry’s only Five Star Pay™, ranked one of the 10 best driver pay plans in the nation; plus the industry’s top home time options, up to 26 weeks a year off and guaranteed schedules.
